Desaturating Images
This is a very simple tutorial, yet very useful especially when making layouts. You're going to begin by opening up a nice image in photoshop.
Begin by going to Image » Adjustments » Brightness/Contrast. Make only your Brightness +50 then press ok. Now in order to duplicate your image press Ctrl+J on your current layer on your layers palette. On your second image (it would be the very first one on your layers palette, change the drop down menu to "Overlay").
Head back up to your image menu and go to Image » Adjustments » Desaturate. This will make your image brighter, and it's nice, but not exactly the effect were looking for.
So in order to get the actual effect you're going to actually want to go back to Image » Adjustments » Brightness/Contrast and go to -50 for brightness only. This will darken your image, make sure you are on the duplicated layer aswell or else it won't look right. I know it sounds kind of stupid to make the brightness +50 and then -50 but believe it or not it makes a difference. So that's all, and your done.
